The Ministry Of Health launched a pilot project on countering medicines falsification

At the meeting on July 24, 2019 the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine adopted a decision "On introduction of a pilot project on marking with control (identification) sings and monitoring of medicines circulation". The timeline for the project implementation will be known once this document is released to the public. The regulation is approved for the implementation of the Concept of Public Policy Realization for Preventing Medicines Falsification. At the first stage (2019-2020) this Concept provides for introduction of pilot project on the packaging of medicines for additional means of protection (2D coding) on the example of some International Non-proprietary Names (INNs) involving entities of pharmaceutical market of different levels. Participation in pilot project is voluntary. It is also expected to introduce automatized system of medicines circulation monitoring and its compulsory use for medicines marked with control (identification) signs.

At the end of the pilot project, the problematic aspects and its remedial work will be reviewed to ensure that the system of marking packages of medicines will work throughout Ukraine as early as 2023.

It should be reminded that the introduction of such a system on countering medicines falsification is consistent with European practice.

Thus, for EU Member States it is compulsory to apply the Commission Regulation (EU) No 2016/161 dated 2 October 2015, which supplements the Directive 2001/83/ EU, by ordering the marking each medicine’s package with an individual code to protect their safety.
